Oberwiesenthal Cranzahl Fichtelberg Annaberg Trip
Schnee. Snow. Freeze. What a great way to spend the weekend with family and enjoy the view from the highest city in Germany: Oberwiesenthal.
We started our trip by heading to Oberwiesenthal Bahnhof to ride the famous Dampfloch, a steam locomotive train.
Almost every corner is covered in snow and a lot of it. A wrong step could lead you to a hidden whole or your entire leg covered in snow.
From the main parking lot, we reached the train station by foot within a few minutes. We got an instant preview of the steam coming from the train as well the bridge it'll cross over.
Most of the sidewalk is covered in snow so pedestrians could often be seen walking very close to the roadway. It's recommended to drive here with extra caution and to check for directional signs to reach your intended destination.
Tickets can be bought from the Kurort-Oberwiesenthal Train Station or from the train conductor inside the train. Familie Tickets are also available including return trip from Cranzahl.

The train ride took a total of two hours including the return trip from Cranzahl to Oberwiesenthal. The cabins are comfortable and clean with Christmas Decorations. It's recommended to bring your own snacks and drinks.
After the ride, we had lunch at Hotel-Gasthof Zum Alten Brauhaus. They serve delicious meals, have great staff and spacious seats as well as clean toilets.
The ski resort can be seen from the restaurant and we decided to take the Cable Car to reach Fichtelberg.
We checked out a souvenir shop before exploring the resort. On our way to the cable car, we can see a lot of action: people sliding down the slope, some riding cable cars, and children playing on the snow.
Thank goodness, there's a Red Cross Station here in case of accidents. The closest Hospital we've passed by is Erzgebirgs-Klinikum near Annaberg.
There was a short qeue to the Cable Car Station. Most passengers are with ski gear and are excited to reach the top of Fichterberg then ski back down.

The cable car ride took around 3 minutes. There were a few short turbulences as the car passes through the connecting towers. At the top are hotels and restaurants. Party music can be heard from afar and people can be seen taking pictures while having fun.
We had Glühwein or Mulled wine, took some pictures, and played in the snow. On the way back there were just a few passengers as most of them were skiing down the slope. We drove next to Annaberg Christmas Market.
We reached the Annaberg Christmas Market late in the afternoon. The roads and pathwalk were wet and slippery.

There were puddles of molten snow everywhere and as much as I tried to avoid them, I got my feet wet. It was freezing cold. Luckily I was in good company and there was a winter shoe shop nearby with a very friendy owner. I got a new pair of socks and winter shoes in no time.
